Natural Oily Skin Remedies

Have you tried various products for oily skin but nothing seems to do the job? Have you heard about natural oily skin remedies but you’re too skeptical to try them? If you are desperate to find a solution to your oily skin problems, here are some home remedies that actually work.

Lemon

Why it works: It is rich in Vitamin C that moisturizes, softens, exfoliates and stimulates the skin’s collagen production. Lemon juice is a natural astringent and can be used as a toner for greasy skin. It removes excess oil, dirt and clears acne and helps to fade acne scars at the same time.
How to use it:
Mix lemon juice with water (or not) and apply on the face using a cotton ball. You can also mix it with Aloe Vera which is the best moisturizer for oily skin. Apply it on the face, leave it on for a few hours then rinse off or leave it overnight.

You may also feel a tingling sensation after putting it on your face, but the sensation should subside quickly. However, if it continues to sting and leaves your facial skin irritated, you stop using it.

Witch Hazel

Why it works: The leaves, twigs and bark of this plant have high tannin content, which has astringent properties as well. Astringents are great for tightening the pores and in removing excess oil. It also contains resin, flavonoids and procyanadins, which are best known for their anti-inflammatory and soothing effects to acne-prone skin – a common side-effect of oily skin. You will find witch hazel present in moisturizers, toners and face washes.
How to use it:
Buy a bottle of 100% natural and distilled witch hazel from any drugstore or pharmacy. Use it as a toner and apply it liberally after cleansing your skin, using a cotton ball. You may also mix it with lavender essential oil to make a naturally refreshing toner.
Word of caution: Always read the label first before buying witch hazel because some contains alcohol and other ingredients that can be harsh to your skin. You should avoid such varieties.

Clay Powder

Why it works: The French green clay powder is widely known for its cosmetic use because of its ability to absorb oil and impurities from the skin through exfoliation of dead skin cells. It also improves blood circulation on the epidermis, tightens the pores and firms your skin.
How to use it:
You can buy it in powder form and concoct your own facial mask. Just mix 1 tbsp of green clay powder with 2 tbsp of water to create a paste. Put the mixture on your face, leave it on for 10 minutes, and then wash off with warm water. Aloe Vera gel or jojoba oil is a good clay mask enhancer and works great for oily skin.
Word of caution: Clay masks can be drying and may cause irritation to sensitive skin. Even if you have greasy skin, you still have to use this with caution. Using it 1 to 2 times a week is recommended after using an exfoliant or facial scrub. If you want to go with the “all-natural” theme, oats mixed with warm water will make for a wonderful facial scrub.
These remedies are not meant to replace your basic skin care regimen. It is still highly recommended that you stick to a your usual facial care routine and incorporate these natural home remedies for more effective oily skin treatment. As a reminder, know that there is probably no way to cure oily skin totally – there is only maintenance. If you are looking to reduce the greasiness, consider the option below.

Using Birth Control Pills To Control Oily Skin

An overload of the hormone known as dihydrotestosterone or DHT triggers the sebaceous glands to produce way too much sebum. Some forms of birth control pills, specifically the ones used for estrogen dominance, help control the surge of DHT in the body. Less DHT means less oil gland stimulation. Birth control pills really do work in helping you bring your sebum levels back to normal and give you that shine-free complexion, as they are widely and effectively used to treat acne.
This is not an over-the-counter drug. You should consult your doctor first to get proper medical advice, prescription and clear instructions for its use.
Word of caution: Most birth control pills are FDA approved for acne treatment but not specifically for oily skin. An off-label prescription may be used by your dermatologist. You should know that most women who stop using contraceptives after taking it for a long time may experience breakouts. Also, it takes time (2-3 months) for your body to adjust to its effects. In general, long-term use of birth control pills isn’t good for your health. Seek your doctor’s advice should you have any concerns about this.
